The Prevention of Hepatitis A
How can you prevent hepatitis type A?
Good hygiene reduces the risk of infection:
- Wash or peel fruits and vegetables when traveling in countries with poor sanitary conditions.
- Remember that inadequate health provides half the shellfish contaminated with human feces.
If a person living with you are infected by the virus of type A, the following is recommended:
- Always wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet.
- It is essential to maintain perfect hygiene in preparing meals.
- Each family member must have your own towel.- Use disposable latex gloves when helping the sick family member in their personal hygiene.
- The clothes soiled with stool should be washed immediately or stored in a tightly closed bag until they can be washed.
- Those who live in the house and are not ill should receive gamma globulin.
Is there a vaccine against type A hepatitis?
A vaccine is available against hepatitis type A. Two doses with an interval of six months. The protection afforded by the vaccine is over 95% and lasts 10 years. It is recommended to administer if you are traveling to countries with poor sanitary conditions, for example to Asia, South America or Africa.
Given a short trip, gamma globulin provides a cheaper alternative than the vaccine. Travelers need only have a dose whose effect lasts 1 to 3 months, depending on the amount administered.
Many experts recommend vaccination against hepatitis A to patients with other chronic liver disease or who have received a liver transplant and showing no evidence of having suffered from hepatitis A (IgG negative).
