Diabetes is the major cause of kidney failure, limb amputation, and vision loss in American adults. Diabetes at least doubles the risk of heart disease. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and kidney failure among adults. It causes mild to severe nerve damage that, coupled with diabetes-related circulation problems, often leads to the loss of a leg or foot.

Diabetes is a disease that prevents your body from properly using the energy from the food you eat. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas, an organ behind your stomach, produces little insulin or no insulin at all or when the pancreas makes insulin but the insulin does not work as it should. Diabetes is derived from the Greek verb diabainein, which means to stand with legs apart, as in urination.

Diabetes mellitus means, literally, honey-sweet urine (back when doctors would sometimes actually taste people’s urine to make a diagnosis). Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy.

Diabetes is the most frequently reported cause of kidney failure in the United States. In 1990, it was the underlying cause of kidney failure in 34 percent of patients starting treatment for end stage renal disease (ESRD).

PostHeaderIcon What is teeth whitening?

What is teeth whitening? There are many ways to whiten your teeth, including the use of whitening toothpastes and other products that can remove many surface stains for a low cost, to the use of whitening techniques that can cost up to $ 1,000 and which are used in the dental office, offering dramatic results.

All whitening techniques act in one of two ways:

1. Bleaching Techniques change the natural tooth color, usually five to seven shades whiter. Both the bleaching is performed in the office by the professional and done at home using a bucket use a whitening compound. Bleaches contain an active ingredient, usually carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide in concentrations of 10-22%, which helps remove surface stains or deep. There are significant differences in cost of various procedures used to whiten teeth:

* A session that uses laser whitening and is carried out in the dentist can cost $ 500 or more, providing immediate results and providing dramatically whiter teeth. However, after a year of food and drink (coffee, tea, soda), slightly stained teeth again. With whitening done in the office, you must pay the $ 500 to whiten your teeth again.
* A tray adapted to his mouth and made by your dentist for whitening done at home can cost around $ 300, and you can use it several hours a day or at night for two weeks. When you observe the appearance of new spots just use the bucket for a night or two to remove the stain.
* For whitening products that can be acquired mainly through pharmacies or other places can be gels that are applied with a brush, bite trays and whitening strips that can range from, $ 10 to $ 45.

2. Procedures that do not use bleaching agents: they act by physical action and / or chemistry to help remove surface stains. All toothpastes cause a mild abrasion to remove surface stains between dental visits. Whitening toothpastes have special chemical or polishing that provide additional stain removal. A professional cleaning by a dentist or hygienist also uses an abrasive compound and polish the teeth with which you can remove external stains caused by food and snuff.

Each individual responds differently to various bleaching techniques. Some people respond well to bleaching carried out using toothpastes, while people with gray teeth or more serious discoloration may require porcelain veneers (discussed elsewhere in this section) in order to achieve the smiles that ‘ve always wanted. Only your dentist can determine what is best for you.

PostHeaderIcon What is Anemia and What Causes Anemia?

Anemia occurs when blood does not have enough red blood cells or when the blood does not have enough hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying pigment found in red blood cells. Anemia can be life-threatening. It is a condition that develops when your blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells. These cells are the main transporters of oxygen to organs.

If red blood cells are also deficient in hemoglobin, then your body isn’t getting enough iron. Anemia occurs when your blood doesn’t have enough hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein in your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.

A common cause of anemia is not having enough iron. Blood is actually a liquid made up of several different cell types. One of the most important and most numerous cell types is the red blood cell. The purpose of the red blood cell is to deliver oxygen to the body. Anemia describes the condition in which the number of red blood cells in your blood is low. For this reason, doctors sometimes describe someone with anemia as having a low blood count. A person who has anemia is called anemic.

RBCs are disc-shaped and look like doughnuts without a hole in the center. They are produced continually in the spongy marrow inside the large bones of the body and normally last 120 days. RBC main role is to carry oxygen, but they also remove carbon dioxide (a waste product) from cells and carry it to the lungs to be exhaled. White blood cells and platelets are the two other kinds of blood cells. White blood cells help fight infections.

What causes anemia?
The individual causes of anemia are numerous, but most can be grouped within three major mechanisms that produce anemia: blood loss (excessive bleeding), inadequate production of red blood cells, or excessive destruction of red blood cells. Anemia may be caused by excessive bleeding. Bleeding may be sudden, as may occur in an accident or during surgery. Often, bleeding is gradual and repetitive, typically from abnormalities in the digestive or urinary tract.

Blood loss: excessive bleeding such as hemorrhages or abnormal menstrual bleeding

Chronic illness secondary to refractory anemia: inflammatory GI/GU diseases, malignancies (cancer), arthritis, kidney or liver failure, and acute and chronic infections

Cancer therapy: surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy

Infiltration (replacement) of bone marrow with cancer

Hemolysis: Breakdown or destruction of red blood cells

Decreased red cell production due to low levels of erythropoietin

Higher than normal rates of RBC destruction can be the result of inherited blood disorders like sickle cell anemia, and certain enzyme deficiencies. These disorders create abnormalities in the RBCs that cause them to die off in a shorter period of time than healthy RBCs. In people with hemolytic anemia, the immune system mistakenly attacks RBCs.

Decreased red cell production by the bone marrow
Pregnant women are at an increased risk of iron deficiency anemia because their iron stores have to serve the increased blood volume of the mother as well as be a source of hemoglobin for the growing fetus.

PostHeaderIcon Lower Back Pain with a Kidney Infection

The causes of back pain come in many different forms. You can get back pain from something as simple stretching incorrectly or walking in high heels. One other way people suffer from back pain is because they have a kidney infection. The pain can radiate into the back from this kidney infection.

Symptoms and Other Signs
If you are suffering from an uncomfortable pain in your mid back or lower back and this pain has been going on for a while, you need to go and see your doctor. This could possibly be the sign of a kidney infection or maybe your back has experienced some other trauma.

If your pain is happening with the following, you can be sure that you are suffering from a kidney infection:

Burning during urination – Fever – Nausea – Blood in urine (may not see)

Pain from a kidney infection will be in the areas on both sides of the spine and just above your hips. Most doctors press on these areas to see if you are feeling any sensitivity in these areas. The pain may also creep to the waist area.

A check of the white blood cells in your body, doctors will ask for a urine sample. By testing the white blood cells in your body the doctor can tell if your body is fighting an infection.

Many times you will know that you don’t have a kidney infection because you will know what caused the back pain. You will have had an accident that caused the back pain. If you don’t remember any traumatic event that could have caused your back pain then you may have a kidney infection.

How to treat a kidney infection
How do you get a kidney infection? This will occur when there is a bacteria that enters the bladder and travels to the kidneys. This infection can and will cause you to have lower back pain, plus a host of other symptoms. There are two forms of kidney infections:

Acute – Chronic
Taking antibiotics is the usual form of treatment for a kidney infection. If you wait and don’t receive treatment for a kidney infection you can end up damaging your kidneys. So make sure if you think you may have a kidney infection, see your doctor right away.

For those suffering with a severe case of kidney infection, your doctor may give you a shot of antibiotics along with anti-nausea medication and pain medication. Once the infection goes away the pain in the lower back will subside.

Pain treatment for the lower back
Treating pain from infection will relieve the pain much quicker than treating pain from those caused by trauma. Here are some ways to treat trauma based back pain:

Physical therapy – Topical – Oral pain meds – Heating pads

Rest and extensive treatment is used for pain brought on by:

Herniated discs – Strains -Overdoing exercise – Stretching – Bending improperly – Back spasms

As you can see there is a big difference between pain from trauma and lower back pain from a kidney infection.
